Best Self Publishing Websites in 2017
After a few years of being the self-publishing industry…
I’ve learned a thing or two about how to make money publishing online.
Since it’s my only source of revenue, I’m continually finding new and innovative ways to distribute my content.
That’s why I thought I’d share the 6 best websites to make money in self-publishing online.
Best Self Publishing Websites #1: Kindle Direct Publishing
Let’s get the easy one out of the way since everyone pretty much knows the answer.
Since late-2007, Amazon has provided the best avenue for making money in self-publishing.
Their platform is:
- Easy to navigate
- Fairly intuitive in upload process
- Online support is second to none.
It’s no surprise why Amazon KDP is such a lucrative opportunity.
More recently, Amazon KDP opened the option to convert your eBook to paperback in their dashboard.
The process is still a bit sketchy, but once you master uploading paperbacks…
You can make some decent cash in this new avenue.
Best Self Publishing Websites #2: Createspace
I’m sure a fair amount of you are aware of Createspace.
- Superior customer support
- An easy-to-navigate dashboard
- Distribution to 3 Amazon sales channels & 3 expanded distribution channels.
Did you know that Createspace publishes more than paperback books?
They also offer music and video distribution, making it easy for not only the self-published author…
But musician and aspiring film producer, too.
Admittedly, I have a bit of a soft spot for Createspace since that is where I got my start and continue to make a bulk of my income on this platform.
Remember, the largest market share in the publishing business comes from physical book purchases.
Don’t take Createspace for granted like quite a few of my past colleagues did years ago.
Best Self Publishing Websites #3: Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX)
If there were any platform I see being underutilized today, it would be ACX.
It’s a crying shame because I make a fair chunk of change off this self-publishing option.
The real hang-up is in ACX’s lack of availability in markets outside the US and UK.
However, since ACX is related to the Amazon.com, I’m sure we’ll be seeing these markets open sooner than later.
Best Self Publishing Websites #4: Smashwords
Boasting a broad distribution reach of dozens of online retailers and subscription-based services…
Smashwords is one of the big dogs in the Kindle Publishing Alternatives on the market today.
In my video about Smashwords at this link, I share the pros and cons of the online distributor, so give that video a gander.
Best Self Publishing Websites #5: Draft2Digital
Similar to Smashwords, Draft2Digital offers a smaller distribution pallet of online retailers and subscription-based services than their competitor, Smashwords.
However, where Draft2Digital lacks in distribution, they make up for in ease of use.

Honorable Mentions in Self Publishing Websites
And, before I name the last best websites to make money in self-publishing online…
I’d like to name a few honorable mentions in 3 relevant self-publishing platforms:
Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks, and Rakuten’s Kobo
Last I knew it, these 3 options are available for direct uploads.
And, they offer a competitive royalty structure compared to the Kindle Publishing Alternatives I previously mentioned.
However, I’d rather sacrifice a little percentage of royalty so I only upload once.
It’s up to you how to use these 3 platforms.
They are certainly Amazon’s biggest competitors in self-publishing.
Best Self Publishing Websites #6: Pronoun Publishing
I’ve covered Pronoun Publishing extensively on my YouTube channel and continue to sing its praises to this day.
Rather than repeat what has already been said before, why don’t you head over to my full playlist on Pronoun at this video link.
And, as a bonus, I’ve included an exclusive full tutorial on How to Format Your eBook for Pronoun Publishing.
